Program Structure
The Department of Mathematics at Frostburg State University, offering both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees, provides an outstanding environment for learning mathematics and related skills. In addition to a Mathematics major, a Mathematics minor & a Mathematical Sciences focus are available. For those interested in teaching, there is also a 5-year plan for a bachelors in Math and a Master of Arts in Teaching.

The faculty represent a variety of mathematical interests and, of ten full-time faculty, nine hold doctoral degrees. Three calculus courses and a variety of advanced courses are scheduled each semester.

The Department of Mathematics at Frostburg State University has much to offer students of Mathematics.

  • Mathematics majors at Frostburg State University are able to work closely with their instructors and fellow students.
  • An average class size of approximately twenty-five in calculus classes and about fifteen in advanced classes enables faculty members to give students individual attention and allows students to get to know one another.
  • The University chapter of the national mathematics honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon annually inducts outstanding students into its membership.
  • Several scholarships are available to recognize achievement and potential in Mathematics. The scholarship for Excellence in Mathematics is awarded to mathematics majors in their junior or senior year on the basis of academic achievement. Also available to mathematics majors is the Roscoe G. Bartlett Scientific Scholarship.

Career Opportunities
Graduates with degrees in mathematics are in demand in government, business, industry, and education. According to recent projections, the demand for mathematics specialists will very likely continue to exceed the supply in the very near future.

Mathematics majors at Frostburg State University acquire the mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills they will need after graduation. Most mathematics graduates have little difficulty in securing full-time employment in their preferred career area such as, statistician, teacher, computer programmer, systems analyst, data scientist or operations research analyst."

Students who choose to major in mathematics may pursue a program leading to a career in applied mathematics, or to certification as a secondary teacher in mathematics. For students wishing to pursue graduate studies in mathematics, the program provides an excellent background. The department also offers an optional internship program which provides the student with applied experience off campus.
